About Me:
Northern California photographer, filmmaker and writer Elizabeth Pepin has been focusing her lenses on women and environmental issues since 1997. Best known for her Waterwomen series -- photographs which dispel the "beach babe" myth and celebrate women surfers as athletes, her images have appeared in numerous galleries, museums, publications, and in five books on women's surfing. Elizabeth has also won five regional Emmys for her filmwork as well as many film festival awards. Films include "The Swim" -- about a woman long distance swimmer who attempts a 26 mile open ocean swim from the Farrallon Islands to San Francisco, and "One Winter Story," about the first woman to surf Maverick's, the giant wave near San Francisco.

My I'm passionate about:
By giving voice to alternative points of view and displaying imagery that counteracts the myths and mass media portrayals. My Waterwomen series is a good example of how to exhibit change. Dismayed by the portrayal of women surfers in the media, I embarked on a photographic journey that emphasizes the strong, beautiful waterwomen of all shapes, sizes, ages, and ethnicities. My photographs dispel the beach babe myth put forth by the surf industry and the media and instead celebrating the women as athletes and enthusiasts.
