Equal Representation

Fed up with deep gender disparities and the lack of female representatives in Parliament, women gather for an organized demonstration in Delhi, India. These women, together with their mothers, sisters, and friends, succeeded in shutting down one of the busiest streets in Delhi. As the crowd grew, more women joined the protestors, eventually numbering in the thousands. Police stood by, but did not interfere. These women’s efforts have finally been heeded; on March 9, 2010 India’s parliament voted overwhelmingly to pass a historic bill that would reserve one third of legislative seats for women. Though still short of equal, progress is surely being made due to the efforts of women in India.
